Suburban Gardens

Suburban Gardens was a 7-acre amusement park in Washington, D.C.'s Deanwood neighborhood (50th and Hayes Streets, NE) that operated from 1921 to circa 1940, created by the Black-owned Universal Development and Loan Company as a recreational alternative for African Americans excluded from nearby Glen Echo Park in Maryland. The park featured a roller coaster, Ferris wheel, swimming pools, a dance pavilion with jazz performances, and games, serving both local residents and out-of-town visitors who arrived by trolley, train, or automobile.
